Good news! A step forward towards formal protection of the area
GEKCO gave extensive input into the Environmental Management Framework (EMF) which is set to be the guiding policy for development throughout the Province. The MEC of Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (GDARD) presented the new map and policy to those who attended the GDARD open day on the 26 November. The map identifies 5 Special Control Zones in the province: Dinokeng, Cradle of Humankind, Vaal Dam, Johannesburg South (Klipriviersberg area), and Johannesburg North (the Greater Kyalami Conservancy).
The conservancy is zoned as a Special Control Zone under protected areas. It is indicated on the EMF that the area is important to retain character as it provides specific services to the surrounding area including habitat for threatened species, equestrian and mountain biking facilities.
It states that if a Environmental Management Plan (or EMP) is available for the protected area, it will override the EMF. The area should be treated as a High Control Zone outside the urban edge and conservation and related tourism and recreational activities should dominate.
