A Website of the National Botanical Institute of South Africa which provides information about plants native to Southern Africa and related topics. This is a very interesting website for the gardener who wants to use indigenous plants.

Rennies Wetlands Project

This is a very valuable website on wetlands, providing lots of information such as the six-part Wetland Fix series. This series is a practically illustrated, step-by-step field guide on wetlands and is aimed at wetland owners, agriculture and conservation extension officers and anybody who cares about wetlands. It can therefore also serve as valuable educational material. This website also contains Share-Net educational booklets on wetlands and provides an important link page to other wetland websites.

SAPPI – War on Waste (WOW)

Sappi Waste Paper, the secondary fibre division of Sappi, is responsible for the collection, sorting, baling and supplying of waste paper to paper manufacturing mills. This website contains a Teachers’ Activity Manual, which not only provides creative learning ideas, but also factual information for outcomes-based education. These activities are aimed at Grades 4-7 learners, but many of the activities are adaptable for use by other grades.

ShareNet

ShareNet is an informal network of individuals and organisations collaborating to produce environmental education materials. ShareNet has also developed educational packs to support the four main environmental weeks of the year, namely water, environment, marine and arbor weeks. All Share-Net resources are made available, copyright-free, for educational purposes.

South African Wetlands Conservation Programme

This programme is an initiative of the Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism and was developed to ensure that South Africa’s obligations are met in terms of the Ramsar Convention and aspects concerning aquatic ecology under the Convention on Biological Diversity. The programme is aimed at the conservation and wise use of all wetland resources in South Africa.

The South African Wind Energy Association

This is a non-profit organisation established to further the use of wind energy in South Africa. This website provides information on the economic and environmental benefits of using wind energy for electricity generation. Information is also provided on educational material.

State of the Environment South Africa – The National State of the Environment Report

This report covers both the physical and the human environments. The physical environment includes topics such as climatic & atmospheric change, sustainability of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainability of freshwater resources and sustainability of marine & coastal systems.

Wildlife and Environment Society of Southern Africa (WESSA)

Contains important environmental news and information. The Enviro Education web page provides information about the different environmental education courses offered throughout WESSA’s various regions. Access can also be obtained to WESSA’s magazines, African Wildlife and EnviroKids, an environmental magazine for young people.
